Essay on Sammy Sanford's Cabin
A Cabin In The Woods
With the memory of the skit of Rachael Field and Sammy Sanford, performed by the
Ilesford Historical Society, still lingering in our minds, we hiked to look up the shack
where Sammy had spent his last years.
There it was, nestled in the spruce trees on high ground, mostly hidden from the water.
With fresh red paint, and restored roof, it looked in good condition.
Our good fortune was to find residents in the nearby camp, who turned out to be the
previous owners, Mr and Mrs. Gordon Shaw. They graciously told us what they knew
of
Sammy and showed us inside the cabin which they had restored.
The land had been in their family for generations, and just recently they had sold the large
parcel to O.B.Jackson, of Seal Harbor. The land is now in the Heritage Land Trust for
safe keeping from the wrong kind of developtment
The cabin is small, roughly 8x12 ft,, one room with a porch lean-to, that had originally
been a wood shed and utility area. Flat black slabs of stone made the steps. There had been
a brick chimney on the NE wall, now fitted with a small window. The chimney had either
been pulled or fell down. Two tall windows filled the SW wall, deep shelves with
wainscotting doors made an alcove for the bed. An iron sink, also with wainscotting
cabinet fit in the entry corner. There was still a hole in the ceiling where once a bare stove
pipe surficed for the wood and coal stove, before the brick chimney was built. Perhaps
cooking was also done on this stove.
The original floor was constructed from narrow oak, tongue & grove boards, so the
