Acadia National Park protects the natural beauty of the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coastline of the United States, an abundance of habitats, and a rich cultural heritage. The park encompasses nearly 50,000 acres along the coast of Maine, including Mount Desert Island, Schoodic Peninsula, Isle au Haut, and outer islands that total 60 miles of coastline. There are 33 miles of scenic motor roads, 45 miles of carriage roads, and more than 150 miles of hiking trails.Acadia was initially designated Sieur de Monts National Monument by proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, then renamed and redesignated Lafayette National Park in 1919. The park was renamed Acadia National Park in 1929.
