Hal Newell Jr. memorial service
Tribute to Hal Newell, Jr.
By Nancy E. Jones
There are lots of unique adjectives to describe my Brother, Hal. Probably the
most accurate is LOVING! He was also:
Fearless
Mischievous
Adventurous
Curious
Compassionate
Engaging
Impetuous
Spontaneous
Funny
But most of all: LOVING
Hal had such a faith-filled nature. Sarah has told me that they were always
planning the next mission trip so that Hal could share his faith, his love of
people and his strong belief in the power of one person sharing his faith with
another. Hal was always looking to share this gift.
Even in the final days of his battle, he was thinking of others. Sending me off
on a commission to make sure that the two wonderful health care aides, Joy
and Samuel, received a Huckaby daily meditations book and a Spanish-version
Bible.
Over the last months together Hal and I'd reminisced.
When we were about ten or eleven, we had a sneaking around phase. All in
an effort to avoid some appropriate responsibility.
We'd sneak across the field in Gates Mills to Aunt Lydia's and
Uncle John's to spend a decadent Saturday morning in front
of the television. Then Aunt Lydia would ply us with hot
dogs, chips, ice cream until we felt queasy.
On we'd sneak away to a little Fort in the ravine behind
Grammy's house. There we'd dream up all sorts of
wondrous things and imagine that we were hiding from bad
guys.
Or in Maine we'd spent a lot of time down at the dock fishing
for harbor pollock to feed to Mrs. Bulger's cat, Felix. At the
end of the summer, Felix had noticeably increased his girth
thanks to our fishing success.
In the carefree childhood days, we were so very close, spending a lot of time
hanging out together. He was my best and only buddy.
