Black dress with cape

Black dress with cape

Black (wedding?) dress with cape said to be from 1800s. (A 2014 visitor, a costume conservator herself, feels this dress dates to the 1920s.) Donor's son states the dress came from the Spurling side of the family not the Stanley side and believes his great grandmother Josie Stanley Bunker (b. 1870 on Cranberry) wore it more than once.

2014 Museum visitor costume conservator feels this dress dates more to the 1920s. Suggests contacting Kathy Smith(?) Smith College, MA, for more info on costumes. Hat (#1353) was not part of outfit; returned to donor Karin Whitney. 7/23/18 email from Ron Mountain (donor's son): his mother originally loaned the dress to GCIHS. Donor extended loan to 2020 and intends to donate the dress to GCIHS at that time. If something happens before that date, consider his email proof of his intention to gift it.
